Writing Through The Blahs: Breakthrough Tip for the week of April 13, 2015

Because you write, you know The Blahs. There’s no way to take writing seriously without encountering them. Maybe you’ve been intending to write for a day, a week, a year, a lifetime. Maybe you’ve finished the first half of your IMG_0811novel and suddenly find yourself flat out of the wild energy that carried you for months. Maybe you have learned the hard reality of contemporary publishing and think to yourself, “Why bother?”

It doesn’t matter where you are in your work. All that matters is that you pick up your pen, put your hands on the keys and write into the gray. Imagine you walk out into a fog bank, smoke from a control burn, the nothing that is swirling in your mind. Imagine that as you move forward, an image of a rear-view mirror drifts across your mind. Follow it: I was hundreds of miles from my destination. I’d taken what I thought was the right turn. It wasn’t….

I’d love to see what emerges for you. I’ll be following my own instructions. It’s time to find out what happens next for Nell in the third episode of the pilot screenplay for 29.
