Anything Can Happen: Breakthrough Tip for 7/17/2015

Who informs your stories? Who wakes you so fiercely in the middle of the night with a story that you have to write? Who feels devastated by rejection; elated by acceptance; furious when you send out your writing again and again only to have it turned down – and in that fury decides to just quit? I can’t answer for you. My story-teller is a six-year-old girl who wants nothing more than to be a writer – and a cowboy. Here, for your child and mine, is Shel Silverstein.

Anything

Listen to the mustn’ts, child,

listen to the don’ts

listen to the shouldn’ts.

the impossibles, the won’ts

listen to the never haves

then listen close to me –

anything can happen, child,

ANYTHING can be.

Shel Silverstein

Consider how you care for your little story-teller. As you care for her or him, so you care for your writing.

I’m grateful to those of you who wrote to me with what you want. Here is Carole Milstead’s request:

I appreciate the postings that you had from Kerry Bennett, Lynette Sheppard, and Naima Schuller. They pretty much nailed what I wanted to say. I second what Naima said when she said “everything.” What I would like to have from Breakthrough Writing is summed up for me in Naima’s last line – “What I want is for you to keep going on your path of diving deep into writing and life, so I can watch and learn.” And for me to see what I missed.

…I took a Creative Writing class when I went back to school. Next to astronomy, it was my favorite class of all time. While living in China I blogged every day about life of an expat living in China. I had quite a following. I want to get back to that joy of writing. I appreciate how you make me write so that the fluff is gone while finding my own story. Please keep sharing. Carole

If you have written in response to my request and not seen your response in last week’s or this week’s Breakthrough post, please resend. My messages suffered gremlins recently. Either respond on this site or to my personal email. Thank you.
