S/he said What?: powerful dialogue 1, Breakthrough tip for the week of 11/16/2015

Who are you? How does who you are shape how you talk: to friends, to a boss, to someone with whom you are angry, to an ex-lover, to a pet, to a beloved place? Start with writing dialogue as you might speak. Set your timer for twenty minutes, imagine at least one other person, pet or place. Feel free to have the listener respond. Don’t think or worry about punctuation – punctuation dialogue is a challenge for most of us. If you need a prompt sentence, try this: I took a deep breath. My voice shook.

Please send us your writing. (I think of my readers and myself as a community.)  I’ll work with writing dialogue for other characters next week.

And, for those of you who write short stories, here’s the latest Glimmer Train competition
