The Oxford Junior Dictionary humans are planning to remove many words about the natural world from their dictionary and replace them with words from tech world: Page Lambert We here at the FLF* compound held a day-long meeting to discuss this. Chi Chi pointed out that a world without the word lavender would be a drab world at best, and homophobic at worst. “And what,” Boo said, “would we do without our FLF air force, the ravens?” Benez was appalled that the word “mussel” was eliminated. “I have lots of mussels because I am a cowboy. I have to be strong. Me and my pony have to rescue the comrades who are oppressed.”
Here are some of the words that these short-sighted humans are removing: Beaver, boar, cheetah, colt, cygnet, doe, drake, ferret, heron, herring, kingfisher, lark, leopard, lobster, magpie, minnow, mussel, newt, otter, ox, oyster, panther, pelican, piglet, plaice, porcupine, porpoise, raven, starling, stoat, stork, terrapin, thrush, weasel, wren. Acorn, almond, apricot, ash, beech, beetroot, blackberry, bluebell, bramble, brook, buttercup, carnation, catkin, cauliflower, chestnut, clover, conker, cowslip, crocus, dandelion, fern, fungus, gooseberry, hazel, hazelnut, heather, holly, horse chestnut, ivy; lavender, leek, melon, mint, mistletoe, nectar, nectarine, oats, pansy, parsnip, poppy, primrose, prune, radish, rhubarb, spinach, sycamore, tulip, turnip, vine, violet, walnut, willow. Next thing you know, they will remove cat, cougar, tiger, kitten, tomcat, mamacat, feline, pussycat…
How will human children grow up to know they are part of the natural world if they have no words for it? In a recent Guardian article, Oxford, U.K. says they have no plans at this time to release an up-dated dictionary. It seems clear to us at the FLF that letters from famous human writers have made a difference: Guardian I hope any of you who read this will be moved to contact the Oxford Junior Dictionary people at: bookquery.uk@oup.com and express a strong opinion.
