Last week, I asked you to send me questions, ideas, challenges for Breakthrough posts. One of you responded. I was raised Catholic and know the bad magic of guilt – so I won’t belabor the point that only one of you sent a response to my question. Instead, I’ll give you Lynette Sheppard’s generous words. They are for all of us. Feel free to write us back. Feel free to bring more questions and fresh views to Breakthrough Writing. m
Your latest question on Breakthrough came after my latest writing “crisis”. I may have resolved it – only time will tell.
I have wanted to get back to, work on, finish the story I’ve been working on for what seems like forever. I waylay myself with chores and diversions. My closets are cleaner than they have ever been. Finally, I sit down to write. And don’t know where to go next.
I’ve been writing well to prompts. The problem is that there are no stories or books that are just “prompt anecdotes”. And I’m pretty sure that there shouldn’t be. So where does that leave me? A professional prompt writer? A responder rather than a creator?
This morning when I woke, a glimmer of an idea slanted across my coffee cup. What if I were to brainstorm a series of prompts related to the story I so wish to continue? And I wrote to those prompts – at least one each day? Might I then sift through the pieces and find my direction?
I’m going to try it. I’ll keep you posted. Meanwhile, your posts on self-sabotage are probably most helpful to me just now. Before and after editing might also be delicious, though likely not easy.
